Abstract

The subject of interest of this paper is the re-affirmation of the relationship between literature and history that occurs within a paradigmatic postmodernist novelistic genre—the historiographic metafiction. The research focus is placed on the review of the contemporary notions in literary theory and historiography that take part in redefining the traditional opposition between literature and history, as well as on the review of the textual levels (subjectivity, intertextuality, narrativity, ideology, interpretation), which stress the problematised relations between literature and history, in the context of historiographical metafictions.
These elaborations aim to argue the thesis of the distinct interdiscursive mutual relationship between literature and history, as well as the thesis of the stimulatory and complementary interrelationship between postmodern theory—literary and historiographical—and postmodern literary practice.
