Abstract

One of the pivotal prerequisites a country is to meet in order to participate in the collective defence system, i.e. NATO, is to develop interoperability at all levels within the military structures and capacities. One of the aspects of achieving interoperability is standardization in the realm of language proficiency, measured against the Standardized Agreement (STANAG) 6001. STANAG 6001, in addition to statements and declarations, contains the STANAG 6001 language proficiency scale according to which Standardized Language Profiles (SLPs) should be recorded and reported. This paper aims to explore the significance of standard-based education for achieving language interoperability in NATO through an analysis of the language programs
implemented in the Armed Forces with recommendations and directions of improvement thereof.
