Abstract

In this paper, we examine the importance of the archaeological heritage, the benefits from the investment in its sustainable management and presentation for the societies in small Balkan states. The comparative analysis of the archaeological practice, based on the case studies, and the wider analyses on the development of Croatian and Macedonian archaeology are partially based on our own experiences and conducted research in the two countries in a period of two years. The aim of this paper is to present ideas for the development of new practices in the two societies, initiate reevaluation of their approaches, policies and accomplishments from a comparative perspective and trigger a wider debate on investment in presentation of archaeological heritage in the professional and wider public.
