The Macedonian Identity in the British and American Diplomatic Correspondence
Abstract
In this paper, we refer to the British interest in Macedonia that began during the Napoleonic Wars, continued during the Crimean War, but showed greater interest in the second half of the 19th century and during the San Stefano and Berlin Agreements. From that period on, the Macedonian issue will be constantly present in British diplomatic correspondence.
On the other hand, the USA's interest in Macedonia was incidental. They showed interest during the kidnapping of Miss Ellen Stone, at the Paris Peace Conference, as well as in 1944, when they sent their military missions to the territory of Macedonia. In this context, one should take into account the fact that the USA until 1917 practiced the policy of isolationism, i.e. not to interfere in the developments in Europe.
