Современиот свет и државите во него во последните дваесетина
години влегоа во една нова фаза во којашто меѓународната
политика и националната безбедност инклинираат сè повеќе околу
економските интереси. Обликувањето на светската сцена и
клучните прашања кои произлегуваат од неа ќе бидат препуштени
сè повеќе и повеќе на економијата.
Сè повеќе земји почнаа да сфаќаат дека економската стабилност и
нејзиниот развој, заедно со конкурентноста на глобалниот пазар и
подобрувањето на животниот стандард, станаа клучни за
национална безбедност.
Владите зголемено користат (гео)економски алатки за да се
стекнат со економски и стратегиски предности. Санкции, ембарга,
блокади, тарифи, трговски договори, странските инвестиции,
контрола на увозот, ограничувањата се едни од најчестите
геоекономски алатки за постигнување на целите на државите.
Економското војување се користи и во периоди на мир и за време
на војна против земји со намера да се ослаби нивната економија и
со тоа да се намалат нивните политички и воени моќи, но и да се
влијае на определена држава да го смени своето однесување
