THE EXCLUSION OF RUSSIAN AND BELARUSIAN ATHLETES FROM INTERNATIONAL SPORTS COMPETITIONS IN LIGHT OF INTERNATIONAL LAW: A LEGITIMATE DECISION?

Abstract

This contribution aims to analyze the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on the world of sport. In particular, it aims to assess the legitimacy of the sanctions applied by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA) in football and those adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the Olympic Committee. To this purpose, we will identify the legal basis for the sanctions applied and recall the the principle of non-discrimination. The hermeneutic analysis will be projected on the evaluations still in place by the IOC about the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
