Abstract

This paper examines the role of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the broader system of collective security in upholding international order. As the primary global body tasked with maintaining peace, the UNSC operates within the framework of collective security, a system where states agree to mutual defense against threats to international stability. This study investigates the effectiveness of the UNSC in responding to modern security challenges, including armed conflicts and transnational terrorism. By analyzing key resolutions and interventions, this paper evaluates the UNSC's ability to adapt to evolving global power dynamics and examines the influence of permanent members' veto power on collective action. Additionally, it assesses the limitations and criticisms of the collective security model, exploring reforms that could enhance the UNSC’s responsiveness and legitimacy.Ultimately, the paper highlights the UNSC's pivotal, albeit constrained, role in global governance and its potential evolution as a mechanism for peace and security in a multipolar world.
