SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE LATEST TENDENCIES IN WORD FORMATION AMONG TEENAGERS
Abstract
The latest technological innovations have brought many changes in the way we communicate with each other. Electronically mediated communication, and the language teenagers use was a starting point of interest of this paper. The process of communication yields remarkable results, through its participants. We have the sender of a certain message, the social networks as the channel through which the message goes through and the receiver of the message (or the one that the message is intended for), who also has to decode it. The influence of the new ways of communication, such as the mobile phones and the internet social media is enormous from the point of view of the language needed to transmit the message. Social media has changed the whole process of communication, the availability of information needed, of lowering the time to transmit the message, and the practical aspect of this type of communication. The creativity of the users of the language, English in this case, their literacy, knowledge of grammar, word formation and phonetic rules, are put to the test when communicating through mediums like Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, Whatsapp, etc. The forms of the words which appeared as a result of this type of communication are not coined anew; rather they are formed from already existent forms or words.
