The article examines the use of didactic games in mathematics teaching in the 2nd grade of primary school. The focus is on the importance of learning motivation and the teacher’s role in creating a supportive learning environment. The theoretical section presents key findings on motivation, didactic games, and their effectiveness, complemented by the results of national and international research. The empirical part is based on a case study conducted at Hinko Smrekar Primary School, where specific didactic games used in mathematics lessons are presented. The article confirms that didactic games have a positive impact on students’ motivation, active participation, and long-term knowledge retention.
