Abstract

It is known that medical terms used in Turkish language are generally of foreign origin. When we look at the public dialect, it is seen that such words are used. In addition, it is possible to see that many terms of foreign origin are used in Turkish dialect. For this study, some wildly used medical terms of foreign origin in Turkish have been determined and their presence in dialects have been investigated. To limit the study, a broad screening method was not preferred. The Derleme Sözlüğü (DS), which has sufficient lexical density, constitutes the main source of the research. Studies such as articles, books, and theses written in this field were not included. In the review section of the study, terms include disease names of Arabic and French origin such as ahras, dysentery, paralysis, influenza, pregnancy, convulsions, diarrhea, vomiting, cataract, and epilepsy. The mentioned terms continue to exist in the Turkish dialects of Türkiye; however, it is clear that these expressions have many Turkish equivalents. The French word for influenza, for example, has equivalents like dumağı, gezargi, gezeen, ingi, salım, and sökel. The word paralysis, taken from Arabic, is rendered as alınmış, bükmece, vurgun, yarım, yatağan, and yıldırım. The Arabic word for diarrhea is described with words such as aylık, burgun, buruntu, özağrısı, sürgün, tırik, and virik. Such examples are available for all other words of foreign origin in the study.
