Abstract

During the first half of the 20th century the use of furniture is of particular cultural significance with the commencement of the arrangement of the living space in Skopje. The changes in the interior with the application of contemporary concepts resulted in the application and use of different types of furniture according to the family status. These changes in the interior of the city house created a certain characteristic style through the use of natural materials, with simple shapes and stylistic lines. The families equipped their rooms with expensive household furnishings, which were brought from European cities or commissioned by private masters. The guest rooms contained nicer pieces of furniture, later called- a guest lounge. As part of the private homes–palaces in the urban core of Skopje, armchairs, tables, sofas etc., were used. All the elements of the interior design and the applied furniture contributed in raising the cultural awareness of families and individuals acting as vital unit in the social life of the city.
