DIGITALIZATION OF BORDER PROCEDURES: IMPLICATIONS OF THE ENTRY/EXIT SYSTEM WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE SCHENGEN BORDER CODE
Abstract
The paper aims to analyse the role and impact of the Entry/Exit System (EES) on border management, with a particular focus on its implications within the framework of the Schengen Border Code. The introduction of EES represents a significant step toward the digitalization of border control procedures in the European Union (EU), replacing the traditional passport stamping with an automated system for recording entries and exits, including biometric data. The paper explores how this transformation affects the efficiency of border control, waiting time, and passenger flows, all of which are critical factors for the tourism industry and logistics operations. Furthermore, it addresses the legal and operational challenges associated with aligning EES with the existing regulatory framework, as well as issues related to data protection and risk management. Based on analysis of secondary legislation and relevant EU policies, the paper concludes that EES has the potential to enhance both security and efficiency in border management. However, its successful implementation depends on technical readiness, inter-institutional coordination, and user acceptance. In this context, the paper emphasizes the need for a balanced approach between security objectives and the facilitation of international mobility.
