This article focuses on the subject-based tagging of words in a general dictionary that does not require expertise and examines existing monolingual dictionaries of the Kazakh language and their tagging of language and literature, medicine and related field terms. The scanning model was used in the study, and the data were examined using the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods. The aim of the study is to discuss the basic subject conceptualization, tagging in dictionaries and the way terminology is included in dictionaries, and to provide information about what terminology entries in general dictionaries are from a lexicological perspective and how they are processed. The process of separating basic lexicographic units from terminology and its consequences for dictionaries are also briefly examined. In order to understand the “referentiality” of the entry head with a term-unit tag in a monolingual dictionary, an example study was conducted on the general dictionary of the Kazakh language, and the efficiency, benefit and effectiveness of domain name tags were also discussed.
