This paper analyzes the novel The King’s Son by Slavcho Koviloski. It focuses on the character of King Marko, his personal life, and his rule, which offers a different perspective on King Marko as an important historical and legendary figure in Macedonian tradition. It presents various events from his life, together with his personal relationships. In folk tradition, the people created him as a character with remarkable qualities — celebrated as fearless and endowed with hyperbolized strength, but also portrayed as cruel, inhumane, and harsh. Relying on folkloric material, Slavcho Koviloski reconstructs this well-known character in this novel, and attributes to him the same qualities. In the novel, King Marko is portrayed as a brave hero, a ruler, and a protector of the people, but also as a man with negative traits and a darker side. Besides the characters and their traits, the novel also incorporates blessings, proverbs and sayings, folk beliefs, and folk songs. This novel is a postmodern literary work in which the palimpsest appears as one of its distinguishing features. This allows us to analyze the hypotext in the novel, which is the main objective of this research, with particular attention given to the folkloric hypotext within the novel.
