ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ChatGPT – CHALLENGES IN TEACHING GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) affects our lives in everyday situations, from
multiple and diverse aspects. We are in a time when we communicate through computers with
digital assistants, listen to music based on algorithms analyzing our habits, internet activities,
or social media, or even translate messages into English or another foreign language with just
a press of a button. When ChatGPT was released on November 30, 2022, to the public, many
people talked and wrote about the disruptive power and capability of generative artificial
intelligence. However, how is the world of learning foreign languages changing in light of this
new technological development? Various perspectives approach this question. Is it necessary
to learn languages in the beautiful new world of translation algorithms and automated textual
creation, and if so, for what purposes? What language skills will be crucial in the future? What
is the optimal approach of artificial intelligence in language learning? Who will train teachers
to work with AI, and who will develop teaching materials? And what role do teachers play
in this new world of exploration? Through practical examples, we illustrate the specific use
of ChatGPT in learning German as a foreign language and the potential impact of these new
modern tools in the educational process.
