COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FRENCH AND MACEDONIAN ORTHODOX TERMS ETYMOLOGY

  • Svetlana Jakimovska

Abstract

The objective of this article is to give a review of French and Macedonian orthodox terms etymology that could be very useful when translating religious texts. The etymology of orthodox terms is diversified in the two languages, but there is still a high level of coincidence concerning the Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Italian origin of these terms that makes the translator’s work much easier. The particularity of the Macedonian orthodox terminology are the numerous Old Church Slavonic terms  while the number of these terms is quite limited in French. In order to denominate some typical orthodox concepts, borrowings are usually used in French, but the translations are also enabled through generalization or description. Using comparative analysis as a methodology the article strives to present the possible translation choices, but also to present the positive and negative aspects of some translations.
