Abstract

In order to keep pace with the requirements of modern society it is essential to make changes in the curricula and the educational process in general. We are witnesses of numerous changes both in elementary and secondary schools. English language instruction is especially important, since the English language is the basis of modern society. Therefore, English language instruction is constantly being improved and modernized. Learners are no longer passive observers, but they are active participants in the realization of educational activities. The English language is mastered through the four language skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. This paper focuses on the reading skill which is especially important for successful understanding of professional literature which is mostly in English, but also for literature that is read for pleasure. Hence, it is necessary to develop this skill in the early school years. In doing so, reading strategies that are divided into global strategies, problem solving strategies, and support strategies play a huge role. This paper puts emphasis on the current theories and opinions regarding the importance of these strategies as well as some research done in this area. It takes into account the strategies that students apply consciously and those that are neglected. Therefore, teachers have the key role in empowering students to successfully master their reading and critical thinking skills.
